CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
For this new direction, Katie knew they were going to need the help of the race organizer, as well as the local police. They needed to use all the resources they could to track down the records of historic races, and any trainers or dog mushers who'd caused trouble in the past.
They had the race organizer's business card, but when she dialed Mr. Popeâs personal cellphone, she found it busy.
That was not surprising, Katie thought. By now, Pope would know what had happened and she was sure he was desperately involved in doing damage control. She doubted he was going to have time to call back. She wondered if she should try Jason, his likeable older brother, but then remembered Jason was not involved in the organization.
That left the local police - who were also clearly stretched to their limits, with some of the RCMP officers on the scene, and others, she saw, being deployed in security patrols.
Soaring Crow's community was rallying all its resources to help the town combat this deadly threat.
"I guess we might get lucky if we actually go to the police department," Leblanc said, looking around at the organized chaos, and drawing the same conclusions that Katie was busy doing.
"I think it's going to be the only way," she agreed. "They will have someone there manning the office."
Checking the time, she saw it was now after midnight. It was going to be a long, tough night for the police out on patrol, with the temperature plummeting, and the chances of finding the killer growing smaller with every passing minute. By now, Katie was sure, he was back in bed, and most probably laughing at the thought of the mayhem he'd caused. She felt a flare of actual hatred for someone who could act in this cold, callous way as if only his own agenda mattered. What a towering ego it took. She felt furiously intent that they were going to bring this man down.
Police were already tracking the prints, but Katie could see that in the trodden snow, the mass of footprints left after the dayâs festival were little more than slight indentations. Fresh snow would have offered a canvas for better footprints, but they hadn't been so lucky.
Perhaps the angle she and Leblanc were taking would produce results.
Katie headed back to the hotel and climbed into the car. She and Leblanc drove the short distance back to the RCMP offices, with the car buffeted by wind on the road. There, a gray-haired, capable looking officer was the only man on site.
"Are you here to do some research?" he asked on seeing the two of them. "I'm Officer Flannery. What can I help you with? Whatever it is, let's get this guy behind bars."
He frowned angrily, clearly as mad as Katie was that the town's festival was being destroyed by a rogue killer whoâd struck yet again.
"We need access to your records and databases," Katie said. "Also, someone with local knowledge would be helpful."
She looked inquiringly at him, and he nodded.
